April was my first full month living in Washington DC, and other than a brief bout with COVID, it was fantastic!

I avoided it for two years, but covid finally got me.

My niece Caitlyn got into college at Arizona State, I got to know my new city a little better, I met a bunch of new people, and my business has been booming.

Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed to the Supreme Court, the war in Ukraine raged on, and Elon Musk is apparently buying Twitter (lol). Happy Easter, Ramadan, Passover, Tax Day, Earth Day, Coachella, and 4/20 to all who celebrated! I hope you had as good a month as I did — or at the very least that it was better than Madison Cawthorn’s.

Ignoring your deepest needs and emotions in the name of principles will turn you into an unprincipled person.

“Don’t look away. Don’t look down. Don’t pretend not to see hurt. Look people in the eye. Even when their pain is overwhelming. And when you’re hurting and in pain, find the people who can look you in the eye.” — Brené Brown

Happiness is not a function of what you achieve. It's a function of how you spend your time. Success is a temporary thrill. Happiness lies in doing daily activities that bring you joy. There's always a new mountain to climb. You don't have to anchor your emotions to the summit.

I was with a friend yesterday who said “What most people are doing is not self-care, it’s after-care, and that is not sustainable.” And wow, I felt that.

What I’m Watching

I started watching Married at First Sight and I had to stop — it was just TOO AWKWARD. The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On was not much better. I fear that we have become desensitized to insanity on reality TV over the decades.

What I’m Reading

Books:

  • The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony by Roberto Calasso

  • Homewreckers: How a Gang of Wall Street Kingpins, Hedge Fund Magnates, Crooked Banks, and Vulture Capitalists Suckered Millions Out of Their Homes and Demolished the American Dream by Aaron Glantz

I want to read a biography on James Garfield next. Let me know if you have any recommendations!
